

Temperature Control Solution for Tunnel Construction at the Suzhou Project Department of China Railway 14th Bureau Group – Application of Tunnel Ventilation Chiller Units and Air Conditioning Supply Air Cabinets
The Suzhou Project Department of China Railway 14th Bureau Group is a key player in Suzhou's urban rail transit construction, responsible for tunnel boring operations across multiple metro sections within its jurisdiction. Faced with persistently high temperatures and humidity deep within the tunnels, the project department procured core temperature control equipment from our company, including a water-cooled screw chiller (with a cooling capacity of 650kW) and an air conditioning supply air cabinet (rated at 650kW in air handling capacity). Specifically engineered for enclosed underground spaces, this system works in conjunction with the tunnel's fresh air system. It delivers chilled water to the surface cooler (cooling coil) of the air cabinet, where the incoming fresh air is forcibly cooled before being supplied to the working face, providing a continuous supply of low-temperature fresh air for shield tunneling operations.
Our technical team, after conducting professional on-site surveys and heat load calculations, customized a comprehensive cooling and ventilation solution for this tunnel project:
Significant Temperature Differential Creates a Comfortable Environment: Following system commissioning, the fresh air drawn from outside the tunnel is processed by the air cabinet's surface cooler, achieving a stable temperature difference of over 10°C between the inlet and outlet air. This effectively keeps the working area temperature within a comfortable range for personnel. Meanwhile, the chiller's dehumidification effect drastically reduces the relative humidity within the tunnel, fundamentally transforming the previously "stifling and humid" construction microclimate.
Ensuring Construction Progress and Personnel Health: The stable low-temperature air supply not only provides frontline workers with conditions comparable to a ground-level office environment, but also effectively mitigates the risk of work stoppages due to heatstroke or physical exhaustion. This ensures that critical processes such as shield advancement and segment assembly can proceed continuously and efficiently around the clock, providing a crucial guarantee for the project's timely completion.
After one month of system operation, the equipment management supervisor at the project department provided the following feedback: "Our department highly commends this tunnel cooling and ventilation design solution. In the past, summer temperatures deep within the tunnel often exceeded 40°C, leaving workers drenched in sweat shortly after starting their shifts and causing a noticeable drop in efficiency. Now, the cool air delivered by this equipment is clearly perceptible, with a temperature difference of at least ten degrees. The working face has become significantly cooler, and the workers are much more energetic, with smiles on their faces.
